MATA23 Foundations of Algebra
is a compulsory course for a
Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. It covers elementary logic
and set theory, functions and relations, number systems, elementary
number theory, induction, linear Diophantine equations, combinatorics,
polynomials and cardinalities of sets.
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars and exercise classes. Also a
projects consisting of several assignments is included in the course
providing the students with training in mathematical communication in
speech and in writing.
The module is assessed through a written examination and the project
mentioned above. To be awarded Pass with distinction, it is required in
addition to pass an oral examination with a sufficiently high mark.
